The closest one is Port Kavkaz (the straight of Kerch'), but I guess you do not just want to cross to Russia, but rather move in a certain direction?

Thanks for answering again. My thoughts were to take a day or two in Tagonrog. Do you think that would be possible, distance and time wise? Thank you for being so helpful! L

I tried to check it out, and unfortunately the connections do not seem to be fantastic. There is an overnight bus from Yalta to Taganrog (and further on to Rostov-na-Donu), it takes 14 hours. It is a daily bus, and it seems to be another one from Sevastopol', but I am not 100% sure that those two buses are different and not the same. There is no direct rail track and you have to go via Donetsk. Every second day there is a direct carriage from Simferopol' to Kislovodsk passing Taganrog, and it takes 17 hours (departure 1am, arrival 6pm). In the other second day, I guess, one has to change the train in Donetsk or somewhere else, but I did not look it up. Summing up, I do not thing it is feasible with a child unless you are really determined.

Do you want to see smth special in Taganrog? As far as I know, there is nothing fantastically interesting over there.

Thanks for all that research, I can read barely Russian and have extremely limited vocabulary to be able to check out sites only in Russian. It sounds like it would be too much trouble so I will leave it. Since a kid I wanted to visit Taganrog because of Chekov, but when I saw someone's Taganrog page here on VT it seemed lovely so I got interested. Upon further investigation of the map, I realised that it is really quite far from Yalta, and it's already an ambitious trip. So armed with all this info we'll just stick to Crimea I think, with the possibilty of going to Kiev. Thank you!

Indeed, it is probably easier to visit it when you are alone, just flying to Rostov-na-Donu.

Yalta is of course also connected to Chekhov and contains a Chekhov museum (I must admit though I have never been there). Kirov street (Ulitsa Kirova), 112, first trolleybus No 1 to Spartak cinema, then bus No. 8. Otherwise, I am sure any taxi driver will be happy to take you there if you negociate the price in advance.

Also, thank you for your answer in Peredelkino forum a few weeks ago. I think you are the expert on off the beaten track Russia and surrounding regions!

No problem. I am not an expert, I am just an insider. If you are interested in Russia in general, you may want to check my website (six English pages so far, but I will eventually translate the rest). And do not hesitate to ask questions.
