I don't know anymore who the company was, but there are several in Hervey bay, you can do it when arriving there. Prices were very reasonable, too.

Google on bugaustralia.Follow the tabs and its all there. They can booked through backpacker hostels in Hervey bay

Aussie Trax 4X4 Rentals - sorry don't have their web-site but these guy are probably cheapest - they hire older style land rovers
Australian 4WD Hire www.australian4wdhire.com.au
Ausbay 4WD Rentals www.safari4wdhire.com.au

For ordinary sedans all the big operators (Hertz, Avis, Europcar) service the area plus a couple of budget operators, Seega Rent A Car (www.seega.com.au), Hervey Bay Economy Car Rentals, and Nifty Rent A Car (www.ozhorizons.com.au).

Hope one of these does the job for you.
