Budva what not to miss
Posted: Sun February 26, 2006 10:54 AM UTC
hi=)

I'm going to Budva in late June 2006, and staying for 2 weeks.
I'm wondering what not to miss when I'm there?
Are there any recommendations as to what to see when I'm there, and what not to?

Thank you =)

Budva itself has quite a small old town, it's pleasant to walk around but won't take long. The rest of the town is a seaside resort much like seaside resorts anyway.

Definitely don't miss Kotor, about 30 minutes away by bus. It's a beautiful walled old town with a fortress above it on a hill - make sure to climb up to the top of the fortress for amazing views. Continuing from Kotor is Kotor Bay (Boka Kotorska) which is a fjord-like bay with mountains sweeping down to the water. Near a small place called Perast are a couple of tiny islands with churches, you can get a boat out to them.

Also 30 minutes away by bus, but heading inland, is Cetinje, which used to be the capital of Montenegro. It's kind of an odd place, with old mansions and goverment and embassy buildings surrounded by a really harsh mountain landscape. Interesting in an offbeat sort of way. Near there is Mount Lovcen which is supposed to have great views, it was covered by fog when I was there.

With 2 weeks you could probably explore further in the mountains of inland Montenegro if you want to.

I wasn't there in summer so I can't recommend beaches, but there are some good ones near Budva.

In Budva, there are a couple of places that might be interesting to visit. Old City is definitelly a must visit, where you can check out citadel and churches. There is also quite an interesting museum inside the Old City (near Casper jazz bar).

In late June, Mediterane Music Festival is being held outside the Old City walls. Usually musicians from Italy, Greece and couple of other neighbouring countries are there to compete for the top festival awards.

If you're interested in beaches, do visit Mogren (near Old City), Trsteno (10 minute drive from Budva) and Platamune (not far from Trsteno). Please note that Platamune is not your ordinary sandy beach - it's actually layed rocks that are "slidding" into sea, quite unique.
There are also numerous small beaches on St Nicholas island.

For nightlife, check out the newly opened Trocadero 3-storey high nightclub (behind O'Sole Mio caffe) or open bars (i.e. Rafaello, Renesance) near Budva's post office. For chillout, there are great caffe's on Slovenska Plaza beach and Richard's Head (Ricardova Glava) beach.

Hope this helps a bit :)
