| Pompeii | Getting to Pompei from Naples Posted: Sat February 25, 2006 10:47 PM UTC
My family will be on a Med. cruise in June. We'll be arriving at the port in Naples on June 17 and would like to get to Pompei. I know that there's a train that goes from Naples to Pompei, but does anyone know how to get from the port to the train station?

There are busses and we have taken them but we have also walked and it isn't all that far. Of course we walked from the station to the port and it was downhill. Just watch your wallet and stuff on the bus, we were distracted that day and not so lucky. It was our fault totally just be cautious. And have fun.

It's not a particularly arduous or complicated walk, and worth seeing a glimpse of Naples' downtown. Basically, get off the boat and turn right.
I have never had any problem whatever regarding the sort of petty crime the place is supposed to be famous for. Lucky me. At Naples Central Station, follow the signs for the Circumvesuviana---it's a separate rail company with its own station. If it's crowded, this is one place I would be especially careful of my wallet. Get off at Pompei Scavi, otherwise you find youself in the fairly dreary modern town of Pompei, with a bit of a walk to the ruins.

I've never taken an Italian city bus that was any fun, with the exception of the trip from Perugia station to the top of the hill. Those drivers should have a monument.

i am embarrassed to say but it was my husband and not me so I will tell you. He had his wallet in his FRONT pocket but because of the crowded bus was stuck by the door, $200 dollars and about 250 euro, we had just gone to the atm machine. He had his hand on his pocket but the bus stopped, he instinctively reached up for the bar, the thief grabbed his wallet and ran out the door, 2 seconds max. No doubt done that many times before and it was only 10 in the morning! good days work for so early. They tried to use our credit card for a cash advance but thank god for diligent credit card companies, we had never taken a cash advance before and they refused that one. Me being a woman they made way for me to get to the other side of the bus so I was safe. We went to the police on the advice of several people on the bus to no avail but quite an experience!

Poor you! I've been lucky. In more than 20 years of traveling to Italy I've only lost a camera, and that was my own stupidity. Left the the thing sitting on the seat of the train when I got up to go to the loo. When I got back the camera was gone and so was the nice friendly middle class housewife sharing my compartment. I wonder if they developed my holiday photos. If they did they got a thrill.
You just never can tell. Since then I've been vigilant and never had any trouble. Goodnight. DNW

vigilant is the key. Italy is not full of bad people it is full of good people. And as far as the theft goes I look at it much like Mexico, those people there that steal are hungry, maybe in Italy it is a bit more organized (there were 2 people working that skam according to the Italians on the bus)but they are not violent.Thet don't hold a gun to your head and demand your wallet, they take it without you even knowing most of the time...lol
