I am going to Altenahr at the end of March with a group of friends including my Mother who is in her early 70's, can anyone give me some general information about the town i.e. local eating places (good German food, doesn't have to be expensive but basic stuff that the locals eat)interesting shops, museums or anything else that is of interest.Hope that is enough info.

Altenahr is a tourist resort and wine village with approx. 1700 inhabitants.
According to their website there are over 30 restaurants, (wine)pubs etc.

In Remagen where the Ahrtalbahn once crossed the Rhine is the Peace Museum Bridge at Remagen

Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is the next bigger town. A spa town with casino and thermal bath

And as spa = Romans
in 1980 they have found a Roman villa in Ahrweiler, the best preserved one north of the Alps.

Altenahr is a very nice small resort in the beautiful Ahr valley. It sometimes gets incredibly full there with daytime tourists from Cologne and Bonn (like myself :-) However, that should not be the case that time of year. I can't really give you much info on places to eat in Altenahr as I usually drive down the wonderful valley to Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. Be sure to visit a winery somewhere in the valley. Altenahr is not such a typical wine village, but the famous ones are nearby a bit further down the valley: Mayschoss, Rech, Dernau!

Be sure to visit Ahrweiler, it has a wonderful medieval historic town. A good place to eat there is the Hotel-Restaurant "Zum Ännchen" http://www.aennchen-ahrweiler.de/ ... traditional German stuff with a slight tendency towards Southern Germany, I think the proprietress is from Swabia.

Another good place in Ahrweiler is Körtgen's Weinstube
www.koertgens.de

Upstream and into the Eifel hills, near the famous Nurburg Formula1 racing track is Adenau, another very nice historic town.

Bonn is only 27 km away, Cologne only 50, so these cities are both very easy to reach and offer very good museums and superior shopping!

Another must-do if you have a bus or cars is the Romanesque abbey Maria-Laach, one of the most beautiful Romanesque abbeys ever built! Stunning scenery, the whole area is volcanic and the monastery is set on the slopes of an old volcanic crater being now filled by the lake.

I am travelling with Bernadette and want to thank you for the replies! We are looking forward to our short break but will not have our own transport - I hope we will be able to utilise the train service, but we don't speak German and may have a few problems!!!

Anyway, dankeschon!

welcome! You can certainly use the train that's running in the valley, the famous Ahrtalbahn (look at my tips under Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler) . Main destination is Remagen in the Rhine valley, but there also are through trains to Bonn. The Ahrtalbahn stops at every village in the valley, it is very modern and very easy to use. Do not stay in Altenahr all the time. It is nice and scenic, but also very narrow.
