Welcome to Japan! Hi! I'm Ayurin from Osaka,Japan!
Places to visit? If you are interested in historical places,Kyoto is a must. There are a lot of temples ans shrines.
And I recommend to stay at RYOKAN(Japanese traditional accommodation) You can experience Japanese room and Japanese public bath. And I also would like to reccomend you to take a open air public bath(hot spring)! There are a lot of hot springs here in Japan.
And it will be great if we can meet up!
Ayurin

If you happen to make it to Tokyo-Narita (NRT) and do not have all of the information you want yet, be sure to stop by the tourism information desk at the airport (near the money exchange and ground transportation).
It is FULL of excellent information and a very helpful staff that speaks English.
Best wishes, JP

I think you would be able to get a map of the railways from the Japanese tourist board in your country. I got one from London. It will help in planning.
Kyoto is a must see for the temples and shrines. Nara is nice too.

I cannot remember the address, but I can remember where to get the address. Go to the JAL office at Piccadilly and they will give you the namecard of the JTO. Alternatively, the Japanese embassy at Green Park should have the address as well.

You should definitely go to Nara if you are interested in historical Japan. Nara and Kyoto are a must see. Otherwise, Yokohama is a beautiful city to visit, I also recommend to spend a day in Enoshima, beautiful small island next to Kamakura, by the way Kamakura is also a very interesting place. And of course, you should walk the streets in Tokyo.

Re: Japan rail maps Posted: Sun June 1, 2003 08:16 AM UTC
As most of the VTs above mentioned, Kyoto is a place you must not missed. Osaka is good too but I find it abit similar to Tokyo. Nara is good for a day trip. I stayed in a roykan when I went to Kyoto this year. Kyoto is a good base for you to go to Osaka, Nara and Kobe as these places are just probably about 1 or slightly less by JR train. Buying a JR rail pass is the smartest thing to do if you are staying in Japan and plan to visit alot of places. Will save you lots of money on transportation. If you need more information on Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara, drop me an e-mail or visit my VT Japan page. I went to these places in April in 2002 and 2003.

Definitely contact the JNTO before you go. The ones here in the U.S. will send all sorts of information/maps by mail for free. The London office is listed here: http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/JNTO/whats_jnto/index.html

Re: Japan rail maps Posted: Wed April 7, 2004 08:34 PM UTC
Two years ago I visited my friend who worked at the Canadian Embassy in Osaka. We toured around the city via train (visited Himeji Castle) and with our JR rail passes did a day trip to Hiroshima via bullet train. We joined up with a Hong Kong group that we found on the internet and we toured the island of Kyushu, doing the hot spring bathing thing. Started in Fukoka and bussed it down and around. After the tour we stayed at a ryokan in Nagasaki for a couple of nights. Bullet trained it back to Osaka and then headed home.
