| Veliko Turnovo | Kartala region Posted: Mon February 20, 2006 07:55 PM UTC
Hi everyone
This is the first time I have used this forum. I'm after some information about the Kartala region of Veliko Turnovo. Me and my husband are seriously thinking of buying an apartment there and it will be finished June 2007. We have been in touch with property agents here in England, but it is unclear to us exactly where the apartments are being built. I have shown a colleague the building plans (which are in Bulgarian) and he says that there is a mention on the plans of a 'railway road' he thinks. Anybody out there any ideas or tips on how to find out more information. Cheers |

It will be perfect if you could scan these plans and send it to me, I will be able to see the exact place on my maps.

Hi Peter
the plans are of the apartment, not the area its going to be built sadly. I'm wondering if it is near a railway station because my colleage who is Yugoslavian and could more or less read the plans mentioned a railway road? Thats to only clue I have at the moment. I guess I am going to have to get back in touch with the property agents for more information.

I just found it on one map.
Kartala is the northern part of Veliko Turnovo, also near Arbanassi and Trapezitsa rail station. It's right in the valley of Yantra river so it's not a level ground, but under a hill. It's also near the oldest part of Turnovo and the fortress.

On Peter's map, Kartala may appear as he described, but in real life it is much different. It overlooks the Yantra valley and is all high ground. Kartala is the highest point in VT, in fact. It is close to Arbanassi and Trapezitsa as the crow flies, but there is a huge canyon between Kartala and Arbanassi, and Trapezitsa is at the bottom of that canyon. You could walk to either A. or T. from K. only if you are a real hiker; to drive to either from K. you would have to go through downtown VT.
Kartala is a newer residential area; lots of four-to eight story apartment blocks, many unfinished, along with several row houses and some stand-alones. It has its own electricity substation, which is noteworthy because VT has water and power outages, especially in the winter. Kartala has fantastic views in all directions because it is so high, and it has plenty of grocery shopping, petrol stations, and coffee shops. You don't want to have to drive up there in winter. Snow removal service is extremely spotty.

Oh, I forgot: the VT railway station is about fifteen minutes away by car. Lots of traffic.
Kartala has less pollution than downhill VT.

High ground - over the valley, yes, but it's only around 300 m over sea level.

"High ground - over the valley, yes, but it's only around 300 m over sea level."
Ah, I see. Well, that clears up the altitude question.
