Hi,

I am planning to work in a youth hostel in A. for about 2 months. Is it dangerous for a girl to be out in the streets alone in A. or would you recommend any places I should not go to ??What are male Peruans in general like.Offensive or friendly?? my parents are a bit worried ;-))

Arequipa is a safe place, and one of the most calmed in Peru, you don't need to worry about. I've been alone in Arequipa and walked their streets on my own, and it's not dangerous at all, just don't walk alone too late at night or in places that you don't know, and especially don't stay alone too late in discos or clubs. I think this is a cautious measure we all women do anywhere in the world.
Peruvian males are like any Latin male: very friendly with foreign girls and keen on complimenting women. In province they will be naive and warmer than in Lima. The most aggresive thing they could ever do (if they do) is say a rude compliment or be too forward... if it ever happens, just tell them to stop or your seven-feet husband will get angry :-) Hope you enjoy your stay in Arequipa!
Regards,
Flor de Maria
