Kiruna Which one is better?
Posted: Thu February 16, 2006 01:55 PM UTC
I got confirmation from
--jarnvagshotelle (www.jarnvagshotellet.com)...990 SEK /night include BF
--Hotel E-10 (www.e-10.se)...1350 SEK /night include BF and dinner
We(4 persons) will arrive Kiruna at night then the next day we will go to see ice hotel and the day after we will go to Narvik by train.
Do you think hotel E-10 is quite far from the center? Which hotel is better for us? Because we wont have a car.
Thank you for your suggestion in advance.

We loved Jarnvagshotellet! ..not so much for the accommodation but for the location. We arrived by train from Stockholm and when we alighted from the train, the hotel was staring at us in the face. It shares the same train platform and is not more than 10 meters away! We loved it! We did not have to lug our bags far, no need to hail a cab... :) We too left for Narvik by train. We stayed in the hotel breakfast area till we saw the train arrive - - and we just went out the door and boarded the train! Neat.

The hotel also has a bus schedule to and from the Ice Hotel. We took the local bus which costs us less than half the fare of the tourist bus, and it stops right at the doorstep of Ice Hotel. It's about a 10-minute walk from Jarnvagshotellet to the bus station, and a 20-minute walk to the town centre, crossing a playground. The down side to this is that it's an uphill walk at the playground.

The hotel is nothing to shout about. It has the basics. Clean bed, towels, TV (with CNN), shelves, an open hangar, bathroom (shower, no tub), no refrigerator (which we didn't need as it was winter). There was always free coffee/tea available whenever we came in from the cold. Breakfast too was basic. Bread, eggs, milk, yoghurt, juice, cereal, fruits - which was more then enough for us.

Oh yes.. there's a Thai Restaurant in Kiruna. Enjoy!

Järnvägshotellet is indeed a perfect location if you come by train. The uphill fact is the only downer but you can live with that.

Just to let you know...in a decade or so, the whole town centre will have to move due to cracks in the rock, made by the mining. The first to go will be the railway (closest to the mine) and I read an interview with the owner of Järnvägshotellet last week where she said she could hear the humming of drills way beneath the hotel some days nowadays!
