Nerja Flamenco in Nerja
Posted: Wed February 15, 2006 03:15 PM UTC
I am hoping someone can help! I am hoping to come to Nerja in September and do a week of Flamenco Classes - I can't seem to find any information on the web. Do you know of any schools that offer a week long (5 days) course? Found some in seville, but really wanting to visit Nerja!

Thanks

To be honest, I 've never heard much about a flamenco scene in Nerja. But you may be able to use www.deflamenco.com, they have a huge database of dance teachers and academies all over Spain. Truth is however, that for flamenco dance you will find much more in Seville or Jerez, and better quality as well....

Nerja is a nice place to visit. Honestly it is one of the least Spanish towns I have ever found but a welcoming and comfortable stop along the way.

I have been researching flamenco for several years. In my travels I have found that there are few places remaining in Spain where one can still find authentic flamenco. Nerja is not one of those places. You will only find a few bars or restaurants in Nerja that offer flamenco. Sadly, they are the typically very inauthentic tourist shows that are found in most of Spain.

Authentic flamenco is a deeply gypsy experience. To find the real flamenco experience you will need to find the precious few places remaining in Spain that have retained their gypsy culture. Granada is the most gypsy town in Spain. About an hour and a half drive from Nerja.

Escuela Carmen de las Cuevas is an outstanding Flamenco/Cultural/Language school in Granada. A maze of caves, staircases, terraces and rooms located high atop the gypsy Sacromonte hill overlooking the town of Granada below. Sacromonte is the most concentrated gypsy neighborhood in all of Spain.

The classes at Escuela Carmen de las Cuevas will cost you 80 Euros for two weeks of instruction at the beginners level in flamenco dance technique. Class size is small to ensure quality of learning experience. Formal class instruction is one hour per day. In that one hour you will learn as much as your body and mind can absorb in one day. Then you can spend as many additional hours as you like practicing with fellow students in preparation for the following days class. You will be accompanied by flamenco guitar students who are also practicing for their following days class.

At night you and your new friends will be stepping out to explore some of the most authentic gypsy flamenco experiences in Spain. Unspoiled gypsy bars and clubs that tourists have never heard of. El Tacon, La Porrona, Los Faroles, Alcazaba Cadima, La Rochina and my favorite private gypsy club on a Saturday night, Pena La Plateria.

Accommodations are available at the school. A double room will cost 122 Euros for the two weeks. A private room for yourself will cost 175 Euros.

If you are only seeking a week long (5 days) course I suppose you could simply leave the school after a week. You would deprive yourself of half the experience but you will nonetheless have the richest flamenco and gypsy cultural experience of your life!
