I suppose the Portugese is blended with the other languages in the country. I don't know if you specifically want to learn Portugese but most people in Maputo are quite fluent in English.

In my opinion you should learn portuguese. After all, it is the portuguese language that keep all the different ethnies living and working together. Although in Maputo there is already a number of well-educated people understanding and speaking english, the majority of the people in the streets understand mainly the portuguese.

I'm Portuguese myself (born and raised in Portugal) and have visited Mozambique twice this year.

In my opinion there's not much difference between the Portuguese spoken in Portugal and the Portuguese spoken in Mozambique. Actually, I guess Mozambicans do speak a perfect Portuguese idiom additionally to their local ethnic language. Which is great :-)

"Obrigado" is THANK YOU in Portuguese.
However, if you are going to Maputo, maybe you would like to also learn to say KANIMANBO - the local Maputo ethnic way of saying THANK YOU :-)

best
Mario
