Death Valley National Park best route from vegas and what to see in Feb
Posted: Thu February 9, 2006 04:23 AM UTC
Hi,

Me and my boyfriend will be making a day trip to Death Valley from Las Vegas on Feb 21.

I am interested in seeing the highlights like Dante's view, Zabriskie point, artist's palette, salt formations, maybe sand dunes if we have time. Going to skip Scotty's castle - too far away.

What is a good short way into these areas from vegas. Won't have an suv - just some economy rental.

What is realistically possible to see in a day. Any suggestions for what we should do?

Thanks.

Hi,

From las Vegas, the best is to arrive via 178(Shoshone).Here are the main sites of Death Valley: Badwater, Devil Golf's course,Artist palette. They aer not far from each others. Then you'll arrive in Furnace Creek. To drive to Zabriskie point you have to use 190, only few miles.
Around 9 miles from Furnace Creek on 1190, turn on the right to go to Dante's View.

When you are in Shoshone, stop by 'c'est si bon' a cool fun place to have a drink ;-)

Thanks for the tip!
How long do you think it'll take to reach the main area? And how to get out of the strip in vegas? I am staying at Bally's.

You have first to reach I-15 South which goes to Los Angeles. Then take the exit 33 in direction of Pahrump.
I cant tell you exactly from the strip.. It takes me 2 hours sometimes to get out of Las Vegas :-(
Anyway, you will find a map there, or you can check on mapquest.com, driving directions

Sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells are pretty cool and right off the main road. I was down there over New Year and had a great time. I've heard Mosaic Canyon is pretty cool and isn't a long hike. The canyons in Death Valley are amazing, but many are a few hour hike, and you may not have time to do a canyon hike then do everything else you're planning. Mosaic Canyon is also near Stovepipe Wells.
