Hey,
i often hear that the best way to get around the island is to rent a car etc...

If I am more into bicycling - is it any good there - is roads ok and is it safe to gp around on bike?

I'm unsure where you're planning on going in Guadeloupe, but if spending time on Basse-Terre is scheduled, I wouldn't do it. I was there last year and I have to admit most roads are dangerous.... in a car! Our friendly hosts on the island awaken when behind the wheel if you see what i mean.

To be perfectly honest, even if there where no car the island of basse-terre is so hilly you wouldn't want to use a bike. Just to give a little more weight to my opinion I'm a cyclist with over 2000k last year, a Vancouver to Montreal bike trip and a current winter cycling commuter...

Of course, if you're going to be on the main island most of my comments aren't as useful. I'd be surprised to see the drivers behave differently however...

I am still unsure wether i will go there or not (most probably yes rather than no) but then certainly will not use bike on Basse Terre.

I live on Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe where I have a small B&B opération. I am a former triathlete and I can tell you that cycling in Guadeloupe is a whole lot safer than in France or in Canada. Both are places where I have lived. Cycling in Guadeloupe is not a sport, it is a religion!!! Guadeloupeens tend to drive like maniacs but will neve crowd a cyclist. With the tourists, it is another story... Of course if you want to ride on Basse terre, your nick-name better be "Thunderthighs".
