Zimbabwe Harare Safety
Posted: Tue February 7, 2006 04:53 AM UTC
Hi, I know this question has been asked many times before. My husband and I plan to go to Zimbabwe for a safari in April. We will use Harare as a port of entry and departure. How safe is it to travel to Zimbabwe now? I read in the Zimbabwesituation.com that even the military worries about that riots might occur if the situation will not improve there. Should we postpone our trip until the situation becomes better? I just want to hear some omments from people who have travelled there recently (in the previous month, etc.) or people who know people in Harare. I appreciate your replies. Thanks.

I really feel you will be fine in Harare but it is probably a good thing if you are only there for a limited time. Purely because things can change fairly quickly in these sorts of political situations. Otherwise take normal safety precautions. Most ordinary Zimbabweans are really hurting right now and many people are in desperate poverty so keep that in mind and dont flaunt any signs of tourist wealth.
I love Zimbabwe and her people the vast majority of whom are warm, friendly people caught up in an unending nightmare. I am glad you are going - tourism is virtually dead in Zim now apart from Vic Falls and your presence not only injects much needed foreign exchange but in a way gives support to ordinary people. If you do get talking to Zimbabweans (and please do so) try not to directly discuss the political situation - most are very wary and scared of being heard criticising the Mugabe regime.
I hope you have a chance to get to Hwange National Park - I worked with some wildlife research scientists there and left part of my heart and soul at that place!

I have lived in South Africa and Namibia for most of my life, have travelled as a safari guide through almost every country in Southern Africa.
I was in Zimbabwe a couple of years ago when the situation was also a bit nasty but did not see anything besides the beauty of the country.
I would suggest that you travel to Windhoek or Johannesburg and from there take a flight to Vic Falls,a quiet and lovely town, with all the amenities you may need, from there perhaps rent a 4x4 and enjoy yourselves.
If there is anything else I can help you with do not hessitate to contact me on my email: mano1438@yahoo.es
Have a great trip and my greetings there to the greatest guys, they are offering rafting trips in the Vic Falls, offices situated opposite Winpy!!!

Hey, I am also planning on going to Harare - I would be doing an internship there for a few months. The place I'd be working is in the city centre, and I would be accommodated by the organisation. However, I am worried about the saftey there, as I have heard mixed views, and most of them are about the Vic Falls. Can anyone give me information on Harare? Would be much appreciated... thanx

We still live in Harare and safety is fine as long as you take precautions you would take anywhere else in the world when travelling. You will find Zimbos very friendly and helpful. You won't regret it. Have a wonderful holiday and enjoy yourselves. You are welcome to contact me on sales@zim-sight.co.zw should you require any other info.
