| Arnhem | John Frost Bridge Posted: Thu May 22, 2003 02:59 PM UTC
Where can I find a photo of the plaque on John Frost Bridge. Have tried various websites but no luck apart from the wording. Any suggestions will be welcome.
Thank you. |

Well, I am already mentioned and ... if you give me about a week ... I am prepared to take a picture of the plaque itself and mail it to you. There is a plaque on the bridge that commemorates the heroic holding of the bridge by the platoon of Johnny Frost. The bridge is named after him in the eighties, holding name-plaques on either entrance to the bridge (with a insigne of the arbornedivision). Furthermore there is a commemoration-site at the bottom of the bridge, looking over it. Here stands a canon and are various plaques telling about the events that happened there on september 1944.
Please tell me what you actually want and I will look into what I can do for you. Best regards and thanks for intrest in my town ... Arnhem Paul

I'm new to VT, but it is unfortunate that I didn't visit earlier!
I had the chance to visit Arnhem last week. A Bridge Too Far is very special to me as I am a WWII interested person and the Market Garden offensive started on 17 September, my birthday. If I'd visited this site I might've been able to make more efficient usage of my one day bolt through Nijmegen, Eindhoven and Arnhem. The big question I have is, how much of the bridge is rebuilt?

Hello, Market Garden "veteran",
Thanks for the intrest in this particular event in WW II and the visit to my hometown Arnhem. The bridge got blown skyhigh by the Germans after Johnny Frost and his man kept it against an overwhelming Nazi SS Pantzerdivision-part for almost twice the timespan that they were initialy had to. After the war was finished a year later the Arnhem citizens returned to their burned and plundered town (the battle of Arnhem didn't finsih for them with the pulling back of British troops, as the Nazi's punished the town severely as for it's collaboration with the liberating allied forces. All residents were evacuated, the town plundered and burned to the ground. The bridge was found laying in the Rhine-water, so heavily damaged that it couldn;t be rebuilt. The only parts of original are the stone columns that rest on the riverbed's ground and support the iron construction. The first years after the war there was a temporary "Bailley" bridge next to the traffic-bridge, that was slowly rebuilt in those years (as well as the town itself). I hope I answered your question in a way it satisfies your curiosity and if not ... please let me know. Best regards from Arnhem, Paul
