Re: it's 1953,you want a root beer & burger..... Posted: Fri June 4, 2004 08:57 PM UTC
I'm not sure about any root beer stands, but I grew up just outside of Minneapolis, and moved to the city when I was 18, lived there for 8 years then moved to CA. But, I can think of many off-the-beaten-track things to do in the great city of Minneapolis. First, don't go to First Avenue, it's not worth all that hoopla, it's a dirty club, with people who are trying to out cool each other. I would drive over the bridge and go toward the University of Minnesota. There is a very old bar over there called "Nye's Polonaise room" 112 Hennepin Ave. It's got gold speckled booths and a sing-along piano bar. Often a Polka band plays there too. Great food, old mean waitress that have been there forever, and the feeling that your grandparents would have partied there. It's great, unique, and charming all at the same time. The crowd is diverse, and they're there to have a good time. There are also many new beautiful bars downtown on that same street, Hennepin ( it's very long) that have been built since I've moved away. They rival anything in Manhattan, NY. They are great too. Of course if you just want to get sloppy and dance, go the the Gay 90's, or ground zero. Stay away from Daddy Rocks, (because it just doesn't.) A great place to eat is Joe's Garage, next to Minnapolis Community College. Minneapolis is a wonderfully fun city, talk to some locals they would love to point you in the right direction to their favorite place. Enjoy!
