| Amalfi | Transportation to Amalfi Coast Posted: Thu January 26, 2006 04:53 PM UTC
We'll be in Rome for a few days and then plan to go to the Amalfi Coast and Capri. How do we get there? We are not renting a car. We thought train or bus to Amalfi (or near by) then boat to Capri. Any thoughts?

How many days do you want to spent over there? I don't recommend doing Capri and/or Amalfi in one day starting from Rome.
The nicest way to reach the Amalfi Coast is to take the train to Naples. On the central station you take the ALIbus to the port. From the port you take the "Metro del Mare" to Amalfi. Train to Naples costs app. 15 euro, ALIbus 3 euro, Metro del Mare 10 euro. Single way. It will take 2 hours to get to Naples, 0,5 hours to get to the port and 1,5 hour by boat to Amalfi. In total 4 hours. Alternatives are taking the bus from Naples to Amalfi which will take 2,5 hours but it costs only 3,20 euro. Second alternative is taking the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento and catch the bus to Amalfi. That will take app. 5 hours. I recommend definitely going by Metro del Mare from Naples. You pass Sorrento, Capri and a large part of the Amalfi Coast. However I don't know if there are busses straight from Rome to the Amalficoast. Could be interesting (about 3,5 hours I guess). When going to Capri arrive by train in Naples. Take the ALIbus to the port and the boat to Capri. There will be boats about every half hour, no need for reservation. But as I said, the areas are to nice for a rush in one day. When visiting Pompei from Rome, it can be done. I apologize for my bad English. Chris

to answer, we need to know where you are staying overnights. A one-day round trip would be, as indicated above, not a good thing. Directions to Capri, Pompeii, and elsewhere would vary on your overnight location.

Thank you both for your replies. We are planning on overnight stays (perhaps two nights each) in Capri and Amalfi (or I hear Positano is the place, right?).
It looks like we can do Rome to Naples (by train). Then Naples to the port (by bus). Then port to Capri (by Metro del Mare). Is that correct? Then, can i go from Capri to Amalfi (or Positano) by Metro del Mare? Fianlly, back to Rome. Is there a more direct way to get back to Rome?

Go from Rome to Naples by train. Take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, from which your transportation choices will be endless:
The Circumvesuviana commuter train connectes Naples, Pompeii, Ercolano (don't know the English name) and Sorrento. Public bus service connects Sorrento with coastal towns including Positano, Amalfi and Salerno, with stops in small towns along the way. The bus trip can be terrifying and left me feeling really sick. Boats connect Sorrento with islands including Capri and Ischia, as well as coastal towns like Positano and Amalfi. It is faster (and more beautiful) to travel the coast by boat. I used the Metro del Mare to get from Sorrento to Amalfi. See my tip here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/164194/

I see a note under the Metrodelmare schedule that Positano is suspended. I e-mailed the company but have not yet heard back. Can anyone tell me if this is true? I will be there in a week and may need to make other arrangements.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Janet

There are other boat companies that serve Amalfi and Positano. Call your hotel for more info.

Ive just come back from Almafi four days ago. I came from Rome, I took the train to Salerno, then outside Salerno station there are SITA buses if you look for the one in the direction of Almafi you can take that and it drops you off in Amalfi town centre, its about a 50 min bus ride. I would recommend seeing Capri for sure, I only got to do it as a day trip from Amalfi but would of loved to had longer there. You will have a great time, id go back in a flash!
