Helsinki or Copenhagen

Hi there fellow VTers

I might be opening up a can of worms but would love to get some input on which city among the 2 there I have to go.. and no .. going to both is simply NOT an option *sorry*

Call me a culture vulture but I am into the whole architecture, history, FOOD etc - you catch my drift.

Any comments?
Thanks heaps.

Another vote for Helsinki from me. Copenhagen is nice but Helsinki is more special I think....

Hi, I was in Copenhagen last May, but in Helsinki only before 30 years when I was a child, therefore I cannot speak for both of them.
But, Copenhagen is great; it is a wonderful city.
Large boulevards, beautiful small streets and cute shops, very nice buildings, which I 'm sure will interest you.

Moreover you can travel to Malmoe very easily now by train or by car, passing over the Øresund bridge, thus visiting two countries, two different cities and watching the bridge itself, which I don't know from an architectural, but from an engineering point view it's worth definitely a look.

If you do visit Copenhagen, write your impression from it. It interests me.

A point to mention is that I assume you have x2 more chance to have rainy weather in Copenhagen then Helsinki, but obviously it depends on the time of your visit and some luck.

Very interesting observations there.. am still torn between the 2 places ...aaaagh! :p

Am actually heading there in the summer - June to be exact so I think weatherwise I am relatively on safe ground?

Helsinki/Copenhagen is actually going to be my stopover before I head to Stockholm hence my predicament of only getting to either one of the cities. Time restrictions plays a huge part as I only of 2 weeks (then back to work ..sigh)

Does that provide more insight?

Thanks!

Any time in Scandinavia is unpredictable, especially June as temperatures can be between 15 to 30. I never have been to Copenhagen when its not raining and half of my visits to Stockholm was rainy or very cloudy weather. You should bring wet weather cloths anyway.

Hi!

I have to say that Helsinki would probably be my choice, particularly in the summer. I think that it is certainly better for architecture, and it is generally a more "attractive" city than Copenhagen. Obviously Copenhagen is older and has more history, but it is quite similar to many other cities in northern continental Europe (Germany, Holland etc.). Helsinki is much more different.

That said, they are both great cities, and I am sure that you will have a fantastic time whichever you chose.

Enjoy your trip.

Andrew

Ok, my mind is 80% made up to going to Helsinki :-)

Two more q's pls

1)Cost wise which city would be slightly cheaper ? As in accomondation (hostel more like), food, entertainment.
2)Any VTers want to catch up - ;-)

Thanks heaps once again from a very HOT Melbourne day *all of 38'*!

Hi again,

in my opinion Helsinki is cheaper. At least when it comes to drinks and public transport. Food is about the same level. I'd say a bed is cheaper in Helsinki because hotels are really expensive in Copenhagen. Not sure though, as I have never booked a hotel room in Helsinki.

Hope this helps!

I agree with earlier comments here, if you see Stockholm anyway, why going to Copenhagen? Helsinki is more different, and then if you take the ferry, it is also very special and great experience. Helsinki is surely cheaper then Copenhagen. Just let us know your date of visit and few of us will be for a meeting as usual, if we are in town. My Helsinki page has few travelogues with previous meetings, so you can see what to expect for.

Haha, and as you write all this about the rain I am typing this from a glorious Copenhagen without so much as a cloud in the sky :))) But it is true that the colder "Baltic Sea area" with Stockholm and Helsinki sees more sun than the more rainy west coast of Sweden and the Copenhagen region.

No, June is certainly no guarantee for sun but can be quite gloomy until Midsummer. This is simply because the sea is not yet warm enough to keep 24hr stable weather. But sure, it is a lot warmer than winter and definately a great time since the nights are bright :)

As for the cities...I am inclined to say the opposite :))) But that is because you are going to Stockholm so you will already see a great Baltic archipelago (Helsinki's is similar). Finland is also more "melancholy" just like Sweden, compared to the more continental Denmark. But it IS true that Denmark is therefore also more like the Netherlands than the North at times...hm...hard decision :)
