Addis Ababa Currency Exchange & USD
Posted: Tue January 24, 2006 07:52 PM UTC
I'm very excited that next week I'll be in Addis Ababa! However, I realized my flight doesn't get in until 10pm and I don't have any local currency to pay the Taxi!

-Is there a 24 hour place in the airport to exhange money?
-Do taxi's take US Dollars as a form of payment or does everything need to be done with the local currency?

THANKS!!!!

If there is not one open at the airport which I'm sure there will be someone will be able to change for you whether it be the taxi driver or your hotel. Enjoy Addis, just remember take lots of cash, cards will be of limited use in Addis (only a few banks will give cash advances at a cost) and no use outside addis. Rate in banks 3 weeks ago 8.67 birr to $1

i arrived ADD 4+am and there wasn't anyone at the info. counter... however someone pointed me to a bank and the rate then was 1USD = 8ETB.
i'd probably change about 20 USD, just enough to get to airport + emergency. unless your hotel do not accept card/USD, i'd exchange a little more.

it seems that some taxis accept USD but the rate will be less favorable.
either that or the taxi company will direct you to the change de bureau.
for taxis, you might want to take the blue ones waiting outside the terminal.
the yellow private ones (you'll undoubtedly be approached by the taxi touts) are registered and safer... you'll be given a receipt but they cost more too.
