| Gansu Sheng | Gansu/Qinghai border villages: Here's one you forgot! Posted: Tue January 24, 2006 08:43 PM UTC
I suggest you visit the famous Shan Dan Army Horse Ranch 55 km south of Zhangye.
It's the largest horse ranch in Asia, second in the world. In the summer the pastures are green and in early spring the meadows turn bright yellow. Have a look at the photo on this Chinese website introducing Shan Dan Army Horse Ranch. Have fun! Tell them "Confucius" sent you! http://www.dalu.com/china/gansu/index4.html

Dear VT Member,
Thanks for your quick response. my interest is in small villages south east of Zhangmanzhai, sanbu and Obo. I am told these places though too remote are worth seeing from landscape and tibetian point of culture. Regards

Charak, you already have 5 villages on your list that are all very near each other and south of the railway stop of Zhangye, Gansu. Add to that Qilian (Babao),the main town in that area. You could add a hundred more if you like because that border is more than 1500 KM long. Are you looking for Tibetan culture? Top of my list would be Gansu towns Xiahe (very touristy but still not to be missed) and Maqu that is on the Yellow River and in the narrow area close to three provinces that were all partially included in the old Tibet (Gansu, Qinghai and Sichuan). Here are more names although villages far from the railway/highway will take quite a lot of time to visit. Some names are Chinese, some Tibetan and the Chinese may have created a Chinese name for the Tibetan ones because they can't write a Tibetan name in Chinese characters so if you can't get any Chinese to help you find a village, you may need to find a Tibetan. North of Xining railway stop is Semnyi; southeast of Xining (may be a railway stop in Minhe) is Maying. South of Xining along the Yellow River but not too near the border are many villages such as Garang, Agong, Zawa, Nangdoi, Jainca, and Gandu. farther south is Tongren (Rongwo in Tibetan), Xekog and Toyema. North of Maqu is Koce. East of Maqu on the Sichuan border is Dagcanglhamo. South of the Yellow River's great oxbow is Jigzhi (Chugqensumdo in Tibetan). Along the Sichuan-Gansu border are many more.
