San Rafael Transport from Buenos Aires to San Rafael and then on to El Sosneado
Posted: Mon January 23, 2006 07:03 PM UTC
I am travelling from Buenos Aires to the Valley of Tears" in the Andes where the Rugby Players plane crashed in 1972. We are going with National Geographic to explore the memorial site.

I will be staying one night in BA and then require transport to San Rafael. I want ot travel in comfort. Is there a site wheich explains either train (sleeper) or bus information in English (my Spanish is very poor - Sorry!)

Also, what is the best recommended hotel in San Rafael and Beunos Aires? I will be back in BA at the end of the expedition.

Arriving in BA on 10 Feb 06 and departing on 20 Feb 06.

Thanks for your help.

Can't help you with all your questions but as for the "best" hotel in Buenos Aires you have several to choose from depending on your style. The Alvear Palace is recognized as one of the top 20 hotels in the world, very formal and old world. If your taste runs toward Phillipe Starke then the Faema would fit nicely. Or if you like small boutique in a quirky, fun area then the Bo Bo would be the answer. There is also the Four Seasons, The Sofitel and The Park Tower.

As for travel, there is no passenger train service to San Rafael. As for English language web sites that would explain the bus service there is not one that I know of but have you tried one of the on line translators such as Alta Vista BabelFish? Does a reasonable job.

Hope this helps.

Hi, this is Victor, from Buenos Aires.

Generally buses to San Rafael leave at least daily from Retiro bus station, at around 8 PM. The company is called TAC. You can buy tickets at the station. Itīs an 11 hour ride.

El Sosneado is about one and a half hour away from San Rafael. In San Rafael you can arrange private transportation, which is widely available. I don't know if there are buses that go to El Sosneado besides those that go to Las Leņas Resort, as El Sosneado is on the way there.

In fact, doing some off-piste skiing in Las Leņas I was once in front of the place where the plane crashed, right across the wide valley.

You may even consider sleeping in Las Leņas, though I think there is a small hostel in El Sosneado.

Have fun!!
