Grand Canyon National Park Easy backroads on grand canyon north rim
Posted: Mon January 23, 2006 06:59 AM UTC
Hi,

I've rented a chevrolet blazer but don't have experience with the 4wd driving. So I'd like to know if there is some gravel roads I could drive to get to the north rim like point sublime, crazy jug or toroweep.

Thanks,
louis

www.go-arizona.com/Crazy-Jug-Point-Scenic-Drive
states "32 miles of good gravel roads suitable for passenger vehicles."

www.nps.gov/grca/grandcanyon/north-rim/index.htm
states "It takes a bit of effort, and four-wheel drive, to reach Point Sublime"

www.nps.gov/grca/grandcanyon/tuweep/index.htm
states that the routes to Tuweep / Toroweep are possible but not without substantial risk, and should not be attempted during or after bad weather.

But you definitely need to check your auto rental agreement. Some contracts explicitly state you may not drive on gravel roads. Thus, if your car breaks down on such a road, getting it fixed is YOUR problem -- not to mention what you'll pay for "lost revenue" to the car rental company. Worse, some car companies place a GPS receiver on your car, allowing them to KNOW that you've violated the contact. This allows them to charge just about anything they want for the rental -- like a mileage charge for ALL miles you drove, not just those on the gravel roads. Check this BEFORE you take the chance!

thanks for your information<; I didn't know about the rental restrictions. At my travel agency, they said I could drive on gravel roads, so I'll check with AVIS. If not I don't need to rent a 4wd.

All the best,

Northern Arizona is finally getting some rain and snow so it might be an interesting drive.

Hello,

I'll be there by the last week of june.

By the way, can anyone tell me how I can manage to go to THE WAVE. I know I need a permit and there isn't really a trail.

Louis
