I don't know about that particular resort, although South of Cancun is one of my favorites places on Earth. I have friends who live in Cancun, and closer to Playa del Carmen. The reports I've gotten are mixed, except for the fact that by far the hardest hit, and hence most difficult to rebuild was Cancun...fortunately, the areas South of there had less of a challenge.

Having said that, I'd keep 2 things in mind: Mexico can't afford to lose tourism--particularly foreign, and the amount of labor and time invested in significantly higher than responses in other areas in the country. This is not a socio-political analysis, but to tell you that major concerns (e.g., water, contamination, crime) are being closely supervised by both federal and state gov't.

Now as this pertains to your trip in particular, my advice would be to call (not email) the hotel directly--ask to speak with concierge and they ought to be able to give you some info. Also, you can use web-based directories, find for example, a restaurant (hopefully sounding non-touristy, and NOT in the resort) and make a long-distance call. See if you can find a person fluent in Spanish to make the call.

Hope this helps...

The hotel was severly damaged in the hurricane as were almost all the beach resort hotels on the island. They are slowly coming back on line with the re-opening of the Hotel Allegro Occidental and the Occidental Grand. The Iberostar will reopen very soon now fully recovered and in most places the remodeling has improved the properties.
