| Long Island | Questions about driving around Long Island Posted: Sun January 22, 2006 08:31 PM UTC
I will be taking a car to Long Island. Do I need to make reservations on the Bridgeport/Port Jefferson ferry if I am going against traffic (TO Long Island 9:00 am - FROM Long Island 3:00 pm)
How long does it take to get from Port Jefferson to Montauk at 10:30 am on a weekday? If I decide I don't want to drive all the way out to Montauk, are there equally charming towns along the way? Thanks for your help! Karen |

Hi - from the ferry to the LIE is RT 112 which is a one-laner and can be slow. From the LIE to Southhampton maybe 40 minutes (Exit 70 South from LIE to Sunrise Highway). From Southhampton to Montauk very variable - one lane RT 27. All the towns on 27 are quaint - Southhampton, Bridgehampton, particularly East Hampton, and the Amagansett. The nicest is Sag Harbor -take RT 114 from East Hampton north 5 or so miles. There are great restaurants in all these towns as well as upscale shopping especially in South and East Hampton. Montauk is lower key - we love it. This is Suffolk County - no matter what others do, don't exceed 65 mph, and USE ONLY HANDS FREE CELLPHONE. The trip doesn't look that far, but 112 and 27 are not fast moving highways. We have a few favorite eating places out there if you are interested. If you are into wine, most of the wineries for visits are on the north fork where you aren't but there are 3 or 4 on the south fork - look for signs with bunches of grapes on them.

Hi Karen and nicolaitan
So glad to find the two of you here. These are questions I've been planning to ask. I'd really like to spend a few days investigating Long Island myself. I'm interested in everything from wineries to indian reservation to Robert Moses parks, historic villages, little fishing villages along the coast. Not interested in the big hotels or chain hotels, however. Also not fond of fussy victorian B&B's. so...the problem is, does anyone know of some nice little cottages or a B&B that isn't going to expect me to dress for breakfast in a formal dining room? I'd rather have a place w/ a little kitchen so I could make my own coffee in peace and quiet. Asking too much?
