Correct power point adapter for Australia to Japan?
Posted: Sun January 22, 2006 11:42 AM UTC
Hi there - I'm travelling to Japan next week from Australia, and am wanting to take my laptop whilst travelling although am unsure of the correct adapter to purchase.

Australian power points are three-pronged such as the below:

whilst I believe Japanese power points are only two pronged as below:

The only adapters I can find convert the Aussie three-pronged into a three-pronged 'Japanese' power point such as the below. The circle represents the earthing.

Will this adapter work? Do Japanese powerpoints cater for this three-pronged plug?

Thanks very much and hope this makes sense!!

Greg

You're right that they use the 2 pronged plug - same as the US - if you can find an adapter for US plugs you'll be sorted. I used a 2 prong adapter for my Kiwi stuff whe I was in Japan - it just ignores the 3rd prong.

Have you got a rail pass - they're worth the money if you're going to be travelling much there.

Safe travels mate

Hi, get one that converts to the 2 pronged one instead as sometimes, the ground outlet is not available. In this case, you will not be able to plug the 3 pronged one into any socket.

Besides that, please also note that while the power supply in Australia operates at 230V, that of Japan is at 100V. So if the equipment you are using does not explicitly specify that it has worldwide voltage compatibility (100~240V), then you will need an inverter as well.

Hope this helps.... :-)

Thanks guys for your help.

As an fyi, yes my laptop's power pack ranges between 100-240V so will be alright there.

The only problem that I have left is trying to find an adapter that has the 3 prong aussie on one side and the 2 prong japan/US on the other.

I've been to about 10 different stores (camping, ski, department) around Sydney and they only have 3 prong aussie to 3 prong Japan/US.

If I get this 3 prong to 3 prong one, do you know if I can just take it apart and remove the earth? I'm assuming that this wouldn't be a good idea as I'm not an electrician!

Thanks again...

ps. got the JR travel pass this morning for $340 Australian. Definitely worth the money.

Hi gregatr0n, if you have only been searching for specific travel adapter that converts from one form to another, maybe you can try searching for the universal kits as well.

These universal travel adapter kits (sold usually in travel, DIY, or electronics stores) are truly modular and feature a unit with a universal socket on one side and receptable for various prongs (they typically come with 6 or more different variants) on the other side.

Most travel adapters I have seen are "glued" and so, it will not be easy to remove the additional pin, if it was removable in the first place.

I wish you good luck in locating the adapter.... :-)

I've just been through Sydney Airport last week, and once you pass through check-in at the International Terminal, there is a Duty Free shop at the back of the check in counters which has USA adapters which have 3 prong Aussie female on one side, and 2 pin USA (Japan) male on the other. From memory they were $9.95 Australian.
