My advice would be to stay in the Asia Hotel, perfect for Sukhumvit as it is linked with the BTS (Sukhumvit Line).

Sukhumvit is a big area, and hotel rate vary. If you are looking for something around $40-50, then check Zennith on interent (www.asiarooms.com), which is close to Nana (Soi 4). If you can go up a bit ($65-70) try Majestic on Soi 2.
Good luck!

I used to live directly across the road from Zenith (the city mansion apartments) it is a decent area on Nana Nua (sukhumvit soi 3) close to the Nana BTS, Foodland and Gullivers. Note this area is the muslim area with middle east street etc so will be a bit different than the usual Thai way of life. Plenty of good Egyptian etc. restaurants here. I suppose the hotel will depend on what you are looking for.
If you want to be close to Nana there is a decent hotel on sukhumvit soi 4 http://www.bangkok.com/woraburi-inn-sukhumvit-soi-4/ close to Nana Plaza.
Also Nana Hotel.
Asia Hotel though I still feel is the best way to go as it is cheap and accessible. http://www.asiahotel.co.th/
All these hotels are between 800 - 2000 baht. Good luck in your search.

Dont stay at Arnoma Hotel - its very old and not very clean. The breakfast is not very good. Though service is not too bad.
Try amari chain - i give them 2 thumbs up for the one I stayed near nana station. I think its called amari boulevard..

I highly recommend the Rembrandt Hotel. It is central, quiet, clean, excellent service, 4*. I have stayed there 6-7 times, and enjoyed it very much. Good value for money.

i am not sure of any hotels as cheap as 500 but I think I have seen a number of guesthouses on Sukhumvit 3 the back streets between here and sukhumvit soi 5.

I stayed there a couple of times last November and December. It is a new hotel, and a good value for the money in comparison to the location. The rooms are a bit small, but clean and have all the amenities you will need. Breakfast is usually included and is worth the extra. You could do a lot worse at other hotels for the same or higher price in the same area. Friendly staff. A good choice. Go for it!

Thanks for the comments. How far is it inside soi 2 i.e distance from sukhumvit road to the hotel? Hope it is not a dark lane?

It is no more than 100 meters, and there are lights all over--it is safe. Between the hotel and Sukhumvit Str. is also the Marriott hotel and a mall across from it, so you need not to worry. Thailand is very safe.
I will be in Bangkok in early March too, but will be staying at another hotel, Century Park ($50). It is more convenient to me because of business reasons, but not so accessible to someone who wants to be near many restaurants, and other entertainment venues. Enjoy your stay.

Vigi: Suk11 is said to be a nice and cheap place, and it is located in Sukhumvit soi 11. It is more or less your budget: 600/night/double.
