| Milos Island | What beach/area in Milos? Posted: Tue January 17, 2006 09:04 PM UTC
HI!
I was thinking a trip to Milos island in July. But I did read there is the north wind in july - august... So, I was hoping to get some info about where is a beach that is sheltered from big waves and maybe shallow water..? Or is Milos wrong island if I am hoping to get a beach holliday with "mirror" (no big waves) waters? Any info would be good :) |

You will have no problem on Milos almost all beaches are sheltered from the meltemi wind, the beach east of Adamas is sheltered, all the beaches on the south coast and west coast. The round island boat trip is a good way to see them all.

In all of the Aegean, the prevailing direction of the wind is from the north. What you probably heard of is known as "Meltemi", a not-so-strong but noticeable northern wind, quite frequently blowing sometimes in July, but mainly during the second half of August and most of September. Meltemi may be blowing for as long as 3 days straight, or, if you are lucky, you may stay during an entire week of every day calm.
An advantage Milos has over most other islands is its numerous beaches. No matter what the direction of the wind is, there are always beaches sheltered from the wind, both inside the bay of Milos and on the outer shoreline. In Adamas in particular, there is Lagada beach and Papikinou beach, both accessible by foot. If you ride a bicycle, then Hivadolimni and Provatas are the other, most easily accessible beaches. For all other beaches, expect to pedal a lot up and down through steep hills. Another option is the village of Pollonia on the NE part of Milos, 10 km. from Adamas, with 3-4 beaches of its own, 2 of them sheltered from the northern winds. There are several other locales with fine beaches and 1-2 lodging establishments each, such as Paliohori, Agia Kyriaki, Provatas/Agios Sostis, etc. You may visit my free Yahoo! group: www.milos-island.com for information on lodging in Milos. In addition, my www.milosisforlovers.com site will give you an idea of the Milos landscape, including photo albums of beaches. At www.iMilos.com you'll find short iMovies about Milos. Keep in mind that Milos is relatively expensive in July-August, but a real bargain in May-June and September -October.
