| Saint John's | Where to stay for cricket 2007 Posted: Mon January 16, 2006 02:19 PM UTC
We're planning 5 days in Antigua to watch the Aussies play in the World Cup Cricket in March 2007. Where to stay? We like the idea of being by the beach, rather than in St John's itself, but don't want to be too far from the Sir Vivien Richards cricket ground. Is Long Bay Hotel in the vicinity? Perhaps the cottages at Dickenson bay?

if you want somewhere reasonably cheap on the beach and a fantastic atmosphere there is only one place and that is "Lashings" part owned i believe by richie richardson himself. We are going back in march this year and always go there for a meal and a great night out.

I think "Lashings" has now become "Bikini's" and is under renovation at the moment (probably to be ready for the Cricket next year).
Long Bay Hotel is really nice and is on the east side of the island. It's not as close to the Sir Vivien Richards stadium as St John's, but you would not have as much traffic to deal with! Dickenson Bay has a few hotels along the beach (and some nice ones on the hillside too), these are all not too far from the stadium (just a little less then the distance from Long Bay Hotel). Have a look at: http://www.stay-in-antigua.com/accommodation_map.php The Sir Vivien Richards stadium is about half way between Potters and Parham on that map (It also shows various hotels on the island).

Thanks - the map is great and clearly shows the location of the cricket ground. I think we'll take your advice and stay at Long Bay and have a hire car for the week.
cheers!

I am looking for the same for my son and haven't had much experience with forums. I did pose a question on one forum but can't find it now, so I was very pleased to find your posting. I will check out the replies you received as well. I don't even know which part of Antigua the stadium is in. Hope you have a good trip. Come on Aussie come on. Where are you from in Aust?

The Stadium is the Vivian Richards Cricket ground - in St John's itself - if you google a map of St Johns its easy to find. Accommodation is very expensive - we're hoping to go to the earlier cricket games, ie end of March rather than the finals, but even so we've had a quote of $US400 - $US500 per night. Have you booked tickets - we're in the ballot but won't know whether we're successful until August.
We're from Adelaide. cheers
