| Bastogne | Battle of The Bulge Posted: Sun January 15, 2006 07:33 PM UTC
I will be in Paris (from the U.S.) and hope to travel via train to visit the Battle of the Bulge (BOTB) sites. 1) Is it possible to travel by train directly to Bastogne from Paris? If not - which route do you recommend? 2) I do not want to rent a car - are guided tours of the Battle of the Bulge available in Bastogne? 3) Hotel recommendations for Bastogne? 4) Is Bastogne the best city to stay in for visiting the BOTB or do you recommend someplace else? Thank you!

I have been to Bastogne once and we visited some small local museum and outside the city you also can visit the war memorial monument and another museum.
Nearby is a bison farm (few km away that you can visit ons some periods of he year. (I don't know when you are going? for more info about the place I would like to refer you to the website. In the centre of Bastogne is a touristic information centre. http://www.bastogne.be/60eme/eng/home_eng.htm

You are welcome to email to Diamonddog (at vt) he has been there several times in the woods.
He spent some time with someone who knows the place very well.

Hi
Take the international train Paris-Brussels or the Thalys/Eurostar (buy a ticket in advance). After that take a local train (one switch) Brussels-Libramont-Bastogne wich would take you 3 hours. Check out the train tables at www.b-rail.be ; for the international www.sncf.com (france) or www.thalys.com I can't help you with guided tours, but it's the best choice if you don't want to rent a car. To have a look at the places you shouldn't miss, check out my travel pages ; all towns in the 'province de liége/luxembourg' section are places well worth visiting if you're interested in WWII. No info yet, haven't found the time... Bastogne is a good choice for staying the night, it's the largest town, there's more to do. If you want it calm, rent a cabin/room in the woods (lots of choice in the whole area).

You could also try to visit Diekirch in Luxembourg which also has a pretty good military museum. It is a very nicely situated town as well! Not sure how to get there without a car though.
