Wildlife and accomodation.
Posted: Sun January 15, 2006 05:44 AM UTC
I'm a wildlife photographer and I've found a cheap flight to Toronto in May this year. I'm looking for advice on National parks etc. within about 300 miles of Toronto and how easy they are to reach by public transport. I'm also looking for ideas on reasonably priced accomodation in Canada, as website searches only seem to pick up expensive lodges and hotels. Is it possible to find bed and breakfast accomodation? Finally, how expensive is it to get around by train, as I don't really want to hire a car for my whole stay, although I might look at campera if all else fails?
Thanks, John

Try the Days Inn chain, also the Holiday Inn - we stayed in the one in Brantford and it cost Can$35/night for a huge room. Remember you pay per room not per person. There is bed and breakfast accommodation but often they are as expensive or more so than staying in an hotel. My initial reaction is that the National Parks are huge and you would need your own transport. There are trips/excursions to the 1,000 Islands National Park. You could travel to a place within or on the edge of a park but then you would need transport. As well as trains, investigate travelling by coach. There is a good website for the National Parks both within Ontario, and within Quebec, and the rest of Canada. Can't bring the address to mind off-hand but asking google will bring them to light.

As mentioned, many of the B&B's are much more expensive than staying at either one of the lower cost chains (Check out www.choice.ca for their different motels, or BestWestern, not sure of their url) or local independent hotels/motels. Our passenger train service isn't going to be a lot of help to you, and you would be better off checking out the bus/coach service (www.greyhound.ca) But for getting into the National Parks, you'll need to have a car, and also the fact that bus service isn't necessarily the most convenient. The cost for fuel on a camper, might not necessarily make it a good option.
One thing to note, is that Algonquin Park is a Provincial Park, not a National Park. http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/index.html
Here is the website to the National Parks: http://www.pc.gc.ca/progs/np-pn/index_E.asp
One of the National Parks within your radius is Georgian Bay National Park, http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/on/georg/index_e.asp but to enjoy it properly, you'd need to go via boat taxi, probably out of Honey Harbour, or Midland. Depending when in May you are going to be there, a lot of places may not yet be open for rental. Much of the area opens the weekend of May 20th (Victoria Day weekend)
This website might be of interest to you on the Georgian Bay area with links off it to more info: http://www.ontario.worldweb.com/FeaturesReviews/TownCityReviews/8-805.html
As well as this one:

And one more, just a little bit more to the north:

Hope that this helps you some.

You might want to try a short 3 day canoe or kayak trip into algonquin park. Loads of wild life once you get a bit off the beaten path. A word of warning Canadian wilderness is still very wild and it is easy to get lost in dense bush even with GPS.

Unfortunately, most of the provincial and national parks are out of reach without your own transportation. You should definitely go to Algonquin Prov Park, as you'll be able to see the moose in May. They can be easily spotted along the main highway that goes through the park. See my web page for more details. You'll be able to find a place to stay outside the park boudary. The lodges in the park are quite expensive.

i would suggest renting out a car, staying in motels because for the most part you will be out and about. i strongly suggest visiting point peelee national park, which is the southernmost tip of ontario (and canada). it is a major fly route of the migrating birds. it also has the only carolinian forest so far in the north.

regardz,
