Napier Moving to Napier in February....any advice helpful....jobs, accom...
Posted: Thu January 12, 2006 05:43 PM UTC
Hello everyone out there, well my girlfriend and I are coming to Napier from the US and Canada in early Feb. and we need as much help and advice we can get.
I have one friend in Napier, but other than that we are just taking our chances that Napier is the place to spend the next year of our lives.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of good places to look for jobs, and places to live. We both are looking for restauarant, bar, hotel work, and then hopefully a place to live close to our jobs.
I guess we are looking for the knowledge and advice that all of you have. Please help us, we would really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Dusty Wilson and Ashley Steele

Well, since no one else has piped up, I'll respond with the little I know about Napier (one of my favourite aunties lives near there, so I have visited a few times).

It's a pretty town in Hawkes Bay. In summer there is a good deal of tourism related to boating and the seaside, so this is probably the best time to find casual jobs. Then there are plenty of farms around Hawkes Bay where you might get work (fruit picking etc). I'm not sure how things are in the labour market for the rest of the year though. Perhaps you can start in Napier then move on to a larger centre if the jobs disappear during winter.

As for accommodation near work, Napier is pretty compact so you will not find yourselves commuting any great distance to work, no matter where you live. There is a local bus service, but nothing else within the city. The climate is described as "mediterranean", so perhaps you can get around by bicycle much of the year...

Have a great year in NZ!

Hi there, below is a really good website that has heaps of info on it including employment and housing. Napier is a really pretty town, not huge or a big party town but still lots to do and a pleasant place to live. Its quite touristy so you should have no probs getting jobs in the hospitality industry. Good luck!

Hey Vishi-
Thanks for the advice, but didn't get that website you said had info on housing and jobs in Napier, if you could throw that into a new message I would really appreciate it! Again, thanks for the message.

These service jobs are not likely to be on the job sites, rather they will be advertised in the local papers (not on their web sites unfortunately) or more likely given to whomever pops in to the business to ask.
