Uluru National Park (Ayers Rock) ayers rock-olgas

hihi
renting a car to go to Kings Canyon, but thinking to drop it before exploring ayers rock and olgas, grabbing maybe a bus or something for these sites. Is it easy to move around there (ie. enough and frequent buses) or better to keep the car until the end ?
also have u done the silence of sound dinner ? is it worth it?
thx

We spent some days in the red centre in 1999. Car renting from Alice Spring, to Kings Canyon, and than to Ayers Rock and Olgas. We kept the car until we flu to Cairns. It is worth it as you can go where and when you want. You can watch sunset at the monolith where you like to.

We hired a car as well - more flexibility that way. The highlight of our trip was the Sounds of Silence dinner. We met some fantastic people there who we are still friends with and the local astronomer takes you through the night sky (using a very powerful torch) telling stories about the constellations. She was very enthusiastic and made the evening.

I don't think relying on buses etc is worth even considering. You've just got to have your own transport unless you are part of a group and don't mind being "tied" to that. Been 44*C plus these last 5 or 6 days at Alice!! The wet season has started too with the first cyclone hitting W.A..Good luck and enjoy but not the best until after March (??).

Stick to the car. This way you can go at your own pace.
The Sound of Silence Dinner I have done, it's damn good value. I had a wonderful night. I always recommend this to anyone that goes to Uluru.
Have a great time in a wonderful part of Aus.

HI!

I would agree with the rest - stick to the car. It's so much more convenient.

But if you really want to dump it, you could catch this service travelling between Ayers Rock Resort (where you definitely would be) and Uluru/Kata Tjuta: Uluru Express (http://www.uluruexpress.com.au/)

Be warned - it's really hot in the Red Centre now.

Ditto - stick to the car. But not just because of convenience but because of costs. We hired a car for our 3 days/2 night stay in Uluru (or was it 4 days/3 nights?). Anyhows, car cost approx $40/45 per day. Paid the entrance fee to Uluru (3 day pass) and that was all we paid (other than the petrol of course but used less than a tank). There's no public transport in Uluru and you have to stay in the resort. Hotels expensive for what they are.
So you wanna see the sunrise? 3 hours and $50+ per person. Back in the hotel by about 9am. What to do next? Sunset? Another $50+ per person.
Take the car - determine for yourself what you do and without hoardes of people (imagine the coach parked for the sunset and 50 people all clicking away in a 20 metre radius).
Sound of Silence dinner was great although expensive. YOu just have to accept that Uluru trip is a place to encourage you to spend your dollars.
