Photography in Sapa Valley
Posted: Thu January 12, 2006 10:25 AM UTC
Hi there,

I'm just wondering when would be the best time to do a photo shoot in Sapa? I'm kinda like aiming for the period after the rice fields are green ( definitely after planting season ) and when the weather is not too wet. Other than the rice fields, the famous weekend market, etc, what else shouldn't a photographer miss?

Shutterbug,
b

We filmed up in Mai Chau in the autumn and the light was good. Sapa is great in mid spring, when its cold at night and warms in the day, great low mists etc. Rice is harvested twice a year up there, one early summer, next late autumn (if i remember correctly)

Thanks Jonny, mid spring sounds good, I reckon that will be sometime in Mar? or early April? Would love to see your Sapa shots:)

Cheers

I just went end Nov/early Dec last year to Sapa and there isn't much color left on the colour field so the planting (green terraces) and harvesting (yellow terraces) period might indeed be a good time. Only cons is that that the weather would probably be hot and rainy (very muddy and slippery tracks) and the larger amount of tourist in the area. If you have time, you might also want to pop over to Bac Ha. I find the that it is very colourful and is full of photo opportunities. Try to go at least the night before the sun market if you're interested in the market instead of going on Sunday morning itself. I did that and reached there at around 11am due to the rain. So it's like only 2 hours under the drizzling rain there.

Hope it helps. You may also want to take a look at the my sapa photos at

Hey thanks kssim ! I will definitely take a look at your photos. The harvesting period sounds like a good idea.
