Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Pompeii ROME TO POMEIP BY FS ?
Posted: Wed January 11, 2006 10:03 PM UTC
I have checked on Trenitalia website. When I search from Rome to Pompei, it shows that I can stop at Pompei station by FS. But from the forum, they said I have to take Circumvesuviana from Naples to Pompei. Do I have to take Circumvesuviana ? Or I can just buy the ticket from FS for Rome to Pompei.

How far is the FS Pompei station to the Pompei entrance?

thank you

You can take an FS train from Roma Termini (the main train station in Rome) to Napoli Centrale which will take about 2 hours, then take the local Circumvesuvia train to "Pompei Scavi, Villa dei Misteri" - the excavations are only 100 meters from this station. You have to buy your Vesuviana ticket in Naples.

Schedules can be found at www.trenitalia.com and www.vesuviana.it, but I wouldn't worry too much about the Vesuviana schedule. Trains come about every half hour, so just get on the first one you can. (Your train from Rome could be early or late.) This is an old-style commuter train, that is to say, not very luxurious. No reserved seats.

The Naples train station has two floors. Stazione Centrale, which is on the ground level, and Stazione Garibaldi, which is below Centrale. You need to go down the stairs to Stazione Garibaldi and follow the signs to the Circumvesuviana, and buy a ticket there (less than 3 euros, one way, I think,) You want the train that goes to Sorrento. It will take about 40-45 minutes to get to the the station "Pompei Scavi, Villa dei Misteri." You can check the return schedule once you arrive here, so that you can plan your departure.

I think most people are surprised at the size of Pompei, and wish they had more time. While many tours spend only two hours here, I would say 4 hours or more would be better.

Also, as long as you're going, it would be a pity to miss the National Archeological Museum in Naples, where most of the treasures from Pompeii were taken. It's relatively easy to get there from the Naples trains station by metro. Definitely worth two hours of your time. Only trouble is, of course, this makes for a very long day. But it's worth it, really!

Ciao! Cristina

The FS station is about 500 meters to the south of the Circumvesuviana station. In other words, if you took the FS train to Pompeii, you would have to walk through the modern town a short ways to get to the excavations. I did the reverse walk a long time ago...I have the vague recollection that it took 10-15 minutes, although 500 meters should have taken less time than that (well, it was 34 years ago ;-) ).

Cristina has given you all you need to know to take the Circumvesuviana...we managed to do it (take the Circumvesuviana) 34 years ago without having too much of a clue of what we were doing, so I don't imagine you'll have a problem either way...
