Body Worlds Exhibit Posted: Wed January 11, 2006 07:59 PM UTC
I'm planning to spend MLK weekend in Philly.
Has anyone seen the Body Worlds exhibit at the Franklin Institute? Worth it?
I'm also planning to visit Penn's Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology.

My family saw it in LA and just raved about it.

The University Museum is a must if you enjoy archaeology/anthropology, however if not then it isn't going to be a lot of fun. I haven't seen Body Works but if that subject interests you then you should go to the Mutter Museum at The College of Physicians.

Body Worlds is getting great buzz here in Philly. However, I have not seen it myself. As previous writters have said Penn Museum is great for Archaeology, However, so is The Philadelphia Museum of art. It also has incredible overall collection. Check out www.philamuseum.org. to see if it was what you are looking for.

My visit to Penn is mainly to see the Buddhism Gallery.

They have one of 8 surviving Chinese Lohan ceramic statues. A book has been written about these magnificent statues, another of which can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
A famous lama has said that these statues are embued with something of the enlightenment of the lohans they depict.

I'm sorry I missed the chance to reply to your inquiry about the Body Worlds Exhibit before your trip there but perhaps this will help someone else who is still planning their trip to Philly.
I flew to Philly in October and was able to go to that exhibit. It was the best exhibit I have ever been to. I absolutely loved it. Definitely not for the squeamish but for those who are fascinated by human anatomy, this is great. I was amazed at how close you can look at the bodies and various parts. There was a lady who fainted when I was there so it's not for everyone. There were many kids there and they were very intrigued. Of course, I saw medical students there, too. It was interesting to hear their comments and observations.
Anyhow, that's my take on it.
