You can take a train, bus or boat or rent a car.

Never join any tour agencies for the 1 day Ayutthaya trip as you may miss out lots of highlights in the ruin sides.
Simply take a train from BKK railway station and it takes about 2hours to reach Ayutthaya, hire a tuk-tuk(or taxi if you can afford) to explore the beauty of Ayutthaya. There's numbers of tuk-tuk drivers waiting for your arrival in Ayutthaya. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/660c0/

Yeah, tuk tuks are great. Fresh air, wind in your hair, black nostrils, smelly clothes, harassment from the driver, overcharging, no seatbelts, dangerous driving. Take a metre taxi.

Well, if you intend to spend your afternoon after your grand palace visit and leave for ayutthaya after 2.00pm. I would say you will lead a very rush moment in the Ayutthaya. You probably need mininum 2~3 hours for your return on the road. If you're unlucky, you will have to spend 2hours on a single journey.
Do plan ahead in order to prevent any unneccesary rush in your thailand trip. Am leaving for my thailand trip on next Feb. Happy journey and thanks for your comments.

Dear Vuzu,
I intend to do exactly as you said, go by train and comeback by boat, and while in Ayuthaia, rent a tuktuk or a taxi, but I have some questions. What is the last time departure boat to BKK ? Should I buy tickets in advance as soon I arrive in Ayuthaia ? Are these boats that ones which lunch is included ? How much would be hire a tuktuk or a taxi for the hole day ? Do you know how much is the train and boat ticket ? Thanks in advance Fernando
