Everything is relative. If you are coming from Vancouver or Toronto, Winnipeg has cheap rents. I would need more information to advise you properly. Depends on where work would be, if you have a vehicle or not, what amenities you want in your neighbourhood, etc.

St. James is nice, I used to live out on Hamilton Street where you'd be able to catch 5 buses and compared to Toronto there where really on time like clockwork every single morning.
St. Boniface is really nice too, it's the French Quarter of Winnipeg where everyone speaks French, the area around St. Boniface Hospital is neat. It's all really cheap out there, you can easily get a two floor, two bdrm & bathroom apt. for a mere $590 per month, BUT the wages are a lot lower. The winters are cold, but in Toronto they are much much much colder, I disagree with everyone else but I lived in both places - just be sure to get a humidifer because you will definitely need one. The Transit out there is about maybe $15.00 per week for a pass, and one transfer is good for 2 hours. Everything is pretty spacious out there espcially in St. Vital around the U. of Manitoba.

Hey, I'm checking out Winnipeg too. I also am looking for cheap rent. I'd be receptive to perhaps rent sharing. I'd like to come up and explore the area. On the map, Winnipeg seems to be near many scenic areas with many small towns near by.
