Amalfi Where to Stay
Posted: Tue January 10, 2006 09:05 PM UTC
Hi Everyone

I'm spending 4 days in the Amalfi Coast in May but I'm not sure whether I should stay in Amalfi, Positano or even Sorrento. I want to explore as much of the area as I can but also not be to rushed. Which is the best town to stay in?

Also, is it better to visit Pompeii from Naples or is it just as easy from the Amalfi Coast.

Cheers

Positano is beautiful but it's much easier to get everywhere from Sorrento. Also, I prefer Sorrento because it's a real town that exists for reasons other than tourism (which is still big in Sorrento). Positano is really there just for tourism.

You can easily get everywhere from Sorrento: Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast (Positano, Amalfi and Ravello), and Capri. You'll want to visit the Archeology Museum in Naples as well as Pompeii. Naples is about an hour away from Sorrento by the Circumvesuviana train.

I would agree that Sorrento is the Most convenient, but to my way of thinking that is the only advantage. Particularly if you are renting a car. Positano is but a bus ride away, has a ferry to Capri daily roundtrip, and is more convenient for visiting Amalfi and Ravello (which you should not miss). And as pictures on VT will demonstrate, Positano is beautiful.
