| Torres del Paine | torres del paine area, fjord cruise Posted: Sun January 8, 2006 03:20 PM UTC
hello
we're planning a very big trip of 15 days, including a 3days stay in torres del paine area and the cruise starting from Puerto Montt and going sounth (4 days). the rest of the trip will be Pucon and Santiago and arounds. I wonder if the torres bit is worth it. i mean what is there to see except for scenery? And the cruise -is it a must or i could skip? thank you |

Just scenery - but WHAT a scenery. I don't know what happens camping grounds and hostels at Torres, but if you're staying at the high end hotels, be prepared to be fleeced. My two sons and I stayed there for three nights not long ago and at check out they tacked an extra $300 US to our bill as payment for a dinner we didn't have. I refused to pay, so they refused to drive me out. Since there isn't any other way out (they have specially built vans that fit the extra narrow bridges in and out of the park)short of an unthinkably long hike (and we had suitcases, not backpacks), I paid up. Later in Santiago I complained to the authorities and learned from them that complaints of that nature are common. They didn't seem inclined to do anything about it, though. Cruise is not a must, but it also affords beautiful views. Some cruises furnish crampons to walk on the glaciers.

Hello. By all means, Y E S, it is well worth going to Torres del Paine! I was there last March, and it is not only beautiful, but breathtakingly beautiful! If you are staying at the Explora HOTel, it was worth every dollar, in my opinion. Included are wonderful tours with guides who are very fit & knowledgable. I was there5 days and experienced the changing scenery and weather, which the area is noted for. There were times when the incredibly beautiful towers and mountains disappeared under the rain and behind clouds, then would suddenly appear again, in all their splendor. Do NOT miss this magnificent area. You will not be sorry.
