Mount Isa Information needed about Mount Isa
Posted: Sat January 7, 2006 05:15 PM UTC
I am considering moving to Australia and work in Mount Isa. I am concerned about Health issues as there are a lot of industries smelters etc in Mount isa. Is there any danger to health from these? Second thing is about the life in Mount Isa. Is it a good place to live in considering that it is a small town and I like living in a big city like Sydney etc.

I shall appreciate an early replay.

Cheers.

Mate; think about it......a mining town surrounded by thousands of square kilometres of open fresh air; and you prefer a smog covered pollution belching city because of health reasons!! Come on, give me Mount Isa any day. As for the lifestyle, its different to the big city's, thats why its so good.Life in a country town is what YOU make it!

If you really like living in a big city like Sydney then Mt Isa isn't the place to go. It's like chalk and cheese. Mt Isa is on a major highway linking the Northern Territory to the east coast. It's predominently a mining/processing town but pollution control is relatively good, far better than Sydney's. I'd rather live in a town like Mt Isa any day than a city like Sydney. But I'm glad there aren't too many like me because we wouldn't have any small towns like Mt Isa left. Actually, Mt Isa is really too big for me, I'd have to have a lot of space between me and it.

Hi 1+1,

Thanks for the reply. It seems from the replies received so far that Mount Isa is a good place to live in as most of the people like yourself do not like smog filled big cities. But I like big cities like Los Angeles where I lived for 2 years and Toronto where I lived for a month, because of a lot of options these places offer where one can go to spend some time relaxing or sightseeing. I like big shopping malls, casinos, clubs etc. Mount Isa from the photographs I have seen so far does not have these things and one will be bored after a month or so. I would like to have more replies about Mount Isa. I shall appreciate it very much if you send me some more photographs. How is the education for children?

Thanks a lot.

How long do you intend to live in Mount Isa? If it's not for 20 years:) I think it would be a great Aus experience for anyone.
Having a car would be a plus. There are some great trips you can do from Mount Isa. If you live in the Aus outback you get used to long trips, it's the norm here.
You are close to the Northern Territory Boarder. The Nothern Territory has Kathryn Gorge, Kakadu National Park, Leitchfield, City of Darwin which is great.
From Mount Isa you can go to Winton/ Longreach.
Heading East there is Townsville and then north from there you have the Great Barrier Reef and Rainforest.
Also you can do a trip down to Alice Springs/Uluru.

It all depends on what you want to see. What experience you want.
here is a link that might interest you.

I've stayed in Mt Isa a few times and a lot of times have just driven through. From what you say about yourself I'd think you're not suited to the Isa, that's being blunt about it. A lot of people like the outback, more so to just visit, but some just don't like it at all. What Anne says is very true, but shopping malls are few and far between in that country. The whole atmosphere is different and people interact in a different way. There's plenty there. However, if none of it's of interest to you there might as well be nothing. And that applies anywhere. It's like one girl visiting me asked how the hell can I live in such a remote area, and I asked her how the hell can she live in London. Horses for courses.

It's got to be your decision. Best of luck.
