San Felipe Dangerous Drive?
Posted: Fri December 30, 2005 02:44 AM UTC
Is there any risk involved in driving across the border to San Felipe? i heard about military checkpoints and such, and Mexico is known for its many a kidnappings... So main point being is it dangerous? (keep in mind i frequent Algodones which is considered one of the safest towns and still get nervous about it all)

I wouldn't think twice about it. San Felipe is a beautiful quaint little fishing village with wide open beaches. The water temperature can be 90 degrees. I loved being there. The road is well travelled by Americanos. Should be very safe.

When I went to San Felipe there were no military checkpoints. If there is one it's not a big deal. Half the time they wave you on. They shouldn't be considered a threat. Knowing what I know about the Mexican's I would say that the average Mexican is your friend and would give you the shirt off their back. Just relax and enjoy their company. I'm still researching kidnappings. I'm wondering if that is an urban legend. I've travelled extensively throughout the peninsula, alone, without a problem.

Have a great trip.

Not a problem. (Except that lodging is San Felipe is so damned expensive)
Military checkpoints are not a problem unless you have guns or drugs or a really bad attitude. They aren't going to shoot you. No real reason to have them on the Mexicali-San Felipe route because it doesn't go anywhere.
Kidnapping is a major industry in Mexico, and by no means an urban legend. But not done much in the Baja, and generally exempts tourists.

Which San Felipe are you talking about? There is one near Ensenada on the Pacific side and one on the Sea of Cortez when you take Highway 5 from Mexicali.
A few days ago we went from Mexicali to San Felipe and there was one military checkpoint. They just stopped and asked us why we are going to San Felipe and let us pass without any problems. While we were waiting to pass the checkpoint, I saw that they asked some people to get out of their cars so they could check them, but everyone could pass.

no risk, if you are not goerge bush or you are driving a limo or a humer you dont need to worry about, and they work inside a city because they are loocking for people with money so familiars can pay for, and the militar are loocking for guns or drugs, if you dont bring any dont worry about, and it for safety for you because thats means that the road are free of guns
enjoy your travel, and try to go more to the south because san in san felipe you will find only young kids from spring break
