Rick....
Two suggestions... downloadable map at www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com and you can buy a terrific laminated, folding map at Barnes & Noble called "Streetwise Amsterdam." Between them you'll see everything.

this is a site where you can get a lot of information from.
http://www2.holland.com/amsterdam/gb/
i ordered a free map on this site.
for information you can go to the v.v.v. offices like on the leidseplein and central station.
i bought a cheap book at a witteboekenhal (white books shop) at the kalverstraat. i normal use travelguides from capitool.
another idea rent a guide at the library.
there is a free map for public transport at the central station and some drivers or conductors might have it.
enjoy your stay.
bye diana

Dila's last one is the one I always use. There is a new site at: www.routecraft.com.

Btw, why do you need a travel guide; you have VT (do you need a guide book or guide person?).

remember the first time i looked at a map of amsterdam i bought in amsterdam. the map was 3 ft by 4 ft
on one side was map of the city. on the back was all the street names.
seems there are many very short streets in amsterdam. would not surprise me if amsterdam has more street names than any city in the world. was told that many times the name of the street changes when it goes over a cannal.

I found "Time out" to be the best for me. If you like history and culture then the "Rough Guide" would be good.
