| Cuzco | Train Cuzco to Puno Posted: Wed December 28, 2005 06:38 PM UTC
Has anyone taken the train to Puno from Cuzco? How does it compare to the bus ride... is it really that much more spectacular?
Thanks for any helpful hints. |

I took the bus from Cusco to Puno on the altiplano. It was pretty empty, not a whole lot to see.

Hi,
we took the train last August from Puno to Cuzco. We had a 1st class coach, which included a lunch and afternoon tea. The last coach has a bar and an open platform, thus ideal to take pictures from the magnificent landscape and from the towns, the train passes through. The train is operated by perurail - www.perurail.com - check here for time table and rates. For sure the Lima - Huancayo train is more spectacular, but if Puno - Cuzco is your only choiche for a train ride in Peru, do it! Have fun

Lima- Huancayo line is closed for most of the year, except a few days. Huancayo to Huancavelica is the regular line & is spectacular.
We took the Cusco-Puno train in July. It takes longer than the bus & is more expensive. We were in second class and it was fine. Landscape is quite nice. The line seemed to follow the road most of the time so maybe you can see the same. It is more fun though & quite unique. You go through deserted altiplano landscape and cross a couple of busy towns. Buy your ticket a few days before & ask for a seat on the left of the carriage (Titicaca will be on your left). Enjoy.
