If you stay during weekends or long holidays (11-13 Feb), I would recommend you to book the accommodation ahead.

kanchanaburi has lot's of guest houses and you can generally always find a place.
when i was there is stayed in a couple of very cheap guesthouses.
i quite liked c&c guesthouse and it was also very cheap at only 60 baht per night for a single room.

I stayed at the Jolly Frog, and I liked it a lot. It's right by the river, not the floating rooms, but it's very cosy. It's got a nice lawn by the river where you can relax. I heard that Apple GH is also good, but you definitely need to book ahead.

it might have something to do with the time a year you are there.
i was there in november and there were at least 100 israelis staying there at that time.

The VN Guesthouse is lovely. Clean air con rooms, or fan floatinf raft rooms. Good value and the pineapple pancakes are ace!

TIP: Don't eat at The Apple Guesthouse I had two meals there, both of whcih were edible, but the service was awaful, food was late or didn't turn up and they were very laissez fare, if you ask me the recommendation in the Lonely Planet has sent them downhill.
