| Amritsar | Visit in March Posted: Sun December 18, 2005 06:26 PM UTC
I will be visiting India in March to watch the cricket. After the Mohali Test match I intend to travel by train to Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple. The train is due to arrive at 13:10. Can somebody tell me if I will have enough time to visit the Golden Temple that same afternoon as I will really need to get a flight out the following morning. How long does a visit normally take?
Could someone also recommend a hotel for around the IR1000 to IR1400 range. Thanks |

I flew into Amritsar in the evening. Took at Taxi to the Airport. Checked in at a hotel (slightly outside your price range), and then went straight to the Golden Temple. The evening visit was fantastic. More than enough time.
You will probably have time for a brief look around in the morning. With regard to your hotel, the best place to stay in Amritsar is in the Temple itself. Obviously, you dont book just turn up. If there is space you can sleep there regardless of your religious denomination. This is free, although it is rude not to give a donation. Its fairly spartan but the best way to find out about the Temple and Sikhs. If you look at the I_joo `s armitsar pages he stayed there. If you dont do the above, Amritsar is a typical big Indian City with loads of cheap hotels. You`ll just have to travel around and take your pick. Accomodation shouldnt be a problem unless your visit co-incides with a religious fesitval.

Hi,
Yes, you can goto the the Golden Temple as soon as your train arrives. A FREE shuttle bus service from the Amritsar railway station to the Golden Temple operates every 15-20 mins but is usually crowded. You can take a cycle rickshaw (Rs. 15) or an Auto Rickshaw (Rs. 40-50) to get there. As for the hotel, you can check with Hotel Golden Tower (www.hotelgoldentower.com) which has decent rooms from Rs. 600/- and is near to Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh. Hope this helps
