| Siwa | Short Desert trip Posted: Fri December 16, 2005 08:54 AM UTC
Hi, In april I will visit Egypt and I would like to visit the desert and see it for myself.
I am mainly interested in landscapes with sanddunes and oasises with palm trees, exploring them a little... Basically the stereotypical image one has of a desert. I will only have 3-4 days. Where do you recommend me to go? Siwa sounds good but far out. Are other places like Dakhla or Bahariyya also good for that typical desert trip or not. Who can help me? Thank you very much, Bert |

Siwa is the right choice ( not because iam siwa4x4 , lol ) . but Siwa is the most beautiful oasis in the Egyption oases . i had been 2 all of them , Siwa is the BEST .
Also in west of Siwa , there r sand dunes , what u expect the desert 2 be , parallel sand dunes , very soft sand .

Siwa is great but far from Cairo. From Alexandria the bus takes nine hours. There is also a nightbus so you could travel by night to save time. Close to Siwa the Great Sand Sea begins. When I was in Siwa I took a tour to the desert with Yousef Hotel (some other places have shorter trips and just go to the border of the desert). It was very nice to sleep in the desert (even though a wind blew up and there was a lot of sand in the air when we were going to sleep).
I have some photos on my Siwa page if you want to see how it looks like, but there is no text so far.

I really agree with the others on this one - you do not want to miss somewhere as beautiful as Siwa. You can travel by night, but by day is actually an amazing sight too if you haven't been through a desert before. Plus it really gives you a sense of how remote Siwa was for centuries. The people here are very special and the atmosphere surrounding the oasis is something you will never forget. You won't regret it I promise!
