In addition to that, all the buses from Sofia to Istanbul pass through Plovdiv; you could catch it there. Or you can go to Sofia (ticket about 12 leva - 6 euro one way, 3-4 hours)

No, there are no direct buses from VT to Istanbul. There is a direct train, however.

Veliko Turnovo Busses

I'm here and you CAN go "direct" -least as direct as such things are in this part of the world.

I'd skip the train, unless you've seen them before and don't mind the conditions (pre WWII and filthy usually, ovens in the summer too).

VT is directly between Sofia and Varna, Busses leave every 2 hours going either way (stopping over from one to the other) and from Varna (or around) you can catch a bus to Istanbul every few hours as well.

Bus fare will run you... lets see.... around 90 Euros, converted, one way I think? That's a ball park sum. IF you sign up for a tour, might be less- 160 levas yesterday for an excursion, round trip, three days... but in this part of the world, there are NO guarantees!!!!

*grin*
