| Ko Tao | fun stuff to do.... Posted: Mon December 5, 2005 08:54 AM UTC
hello
goys right we're almost there... i finally decided on some accomodation for koh tao for new year. yeah it certainly took me a while. charm churree was our final choice in the end. so dont tell me anything bad about it now, cos its too late and we've already paid for it!! so the enxt thing i need is some suggestions of good bars, restaurants etc in which to spend my time when i'm there. lloking for cool beach bars where you can relax and lie around drinking copious ammounts of cocktails. also what are these muchroom shakes evereyones talking about. and another question... how easy it is to get smoke on koh tao? or is it not done really.... i am being a risky/silly thanks guys,,, any suggestions welcome, and of course everyone elcome to join us for a drinky pooh once we et over (30th dec) oh eyah and we particularly want to know whats going on on new year eve?? cheers me dears jen xx |

Although charm churee seems VERY nice most of the "action" will be on sai ree that is where most of the bars and accomidations are located . Koh Tao is quite small with its clear water and diving being the main attractions . Sai Ree is about 4k north of you . WARNING! Got a big buzz ... stay OFF the motorbike . I've seen more motorbike wrecks than I can count and its one way to turn paradise to nightmare in seconds . In the price range of charm churee they should have someone who would be happy to get you to the party cheap. As for the gangha . Be descreet with who you deal with but its in the realm of possibilities , same with the smoothies . Have fun good luck .

thanks alot pearson.
4km isnt that far is it. wont be much in a taxi. as you said the hotle should organise that for us. about getting back after everything closes. do the taxis still run till late into the night? hat sort of time do the bars close anyway on koh tao. dont get worng we arent going for a big rave up. we are getting boring in our old age - otherwise we would have gone to kophanghan for a big party! but its nice to have the option to drink till the early hours, esp with it being new year. do you know anything about ko samui. we think are going to have to stay there overnight after our 4 nights on koh tao. just necause otherwise we be stuck in surat thani anwyay and figure ko samui is preferable to surat thani. reckon we'll just be able to get some where to stay just for one night pretty easily?? just somewhere really basic and cheap??? will you be on koh tao over new year? suggest any particular bar names?? cheers jen xx

Opinion is opinion , but heres mine . 1st when I say ride ,don't think like taxi cab . Your more likley looking at a songthaw (pickup with topper and benches)or pickup no benches .You will be only 500m to 1k south of mae haad (downtown) . So don't get shook about getting around . At worst grab a few extra drinks and walk . You can walk the entire length of Sai Ree beach very easily bouncing in and out of bars and restaurants . Closing time , Never saw that while I was there but I couldn't imagine on Tao that the locals wouldn't sell drinks if there were still drinkers . 1 hrs business on New years eve could equal a days business in may . You are going to Koh Tao and its attraction is the water , do get out of the bar and dive or snorkel you'll regret it if you don't . My suggestion would be longboat rather than larger boat . One of the popular trips is around the island to snorkel . Pretty much all day . They bring water and fried rice the rest is up to you . If you dive then do ! You are going at peak season secure your Samui reservation in advance !I agree better the Suret Thani .No I won't be there NYE I arrive for 10 weeks Jan. 4th . Also if you've never been Koh Phangan it is not all a big rave . Developing quickly , yes the good ole days are gone . None the less except for haad rin (full moon location) there are many chilled spots still left and of the 3 islands I still enjoy it best . Ko Samui ..to big ... Ko Tao ..to small.... good for a week tops if you are not a serious diver. Once again have fun , take care.

Smoke....well...its there..any of the islands you will find it...BUT, you have to be careful, very careful.....first, the most obvious spot to find it is at a regae bar...every beach seems to have one or two....once you locate the bar go check it out and keep your eyes open...generally you will find people smoking at some point in the evening...if they are smoking at the bar, chilling out...youre on your way....inquire of someone how they obtained and for how much. When comfortable, ask the bartender.....they will look you up and down and check you out (so to speak)...if they are comfortable with you, you are in. Again though...be careful. See what others are doing...dont be the first.
As far as the shakes I have found them as well....again though, it was on the suggestion of a fellow traveller at the bar. Both the shakes and the smoke generally cost 500b.....not cheap cheap but you do get what you want. Enjoy! oh ya, dont travel with anything...meaning if you have stuff left over dont take it with you....checkpoints and police come up all of a sudden once you are on the main land. good luck A
