Hi!
I had been to Bodh gaya on june 29th and stayed there in Tibentan Monestary closest to Main Temple of Rs 150/-only with attach bathroom. There are so many hotels including three star hotel Ashok that must have booking option by email. But i do not think there is any scarcity of hotels in April. The time there is shortage of room is when Kal-Chakra ceremony is there.I could not explore much of Bodh gaya as most of my time i spent in temple only. But i visit Shankercharya Ashram also that is near Palgu River and saw medival sculptures that are divinely beautifull.Best wishes.

I highly recommend the Tibetan Monastery... we had a room overlooking the gompa... it was beautiful... priced around 150 INR per night... cheap, clean, and affordable... it doesn't have a webpage that I know off so you'll have to do a leap of faith... another interesting option will be the Burmese (Myanmar) Monastery... or just pick any other monastery...
traveling is about chances ... the more you live for chances, the more interesting your adventure will be.... just go with the flow and have a blast! saludos, Fernando
