I would recommned you go to the city with an official tourist guide. Banjul market its very very busy and easy to get lost. we got our guide "brian" from outside the Kairaba/senengambia hotels in kololi, that is gwhere all the official guides are based. He was great, well worth taking a guide. it is better than an organised guided tour because it is more personal. I went with my mum (i'm a 24 year old female) back in november and didn't feel at all scared. beware of the pick pockets though.
I'm sure you will have a fantastic time. don't forget your antimalarials!
